Healing Your Relationship With Money

Hey friends,

Today, I want to dive deep into a topic that many of us grapple with—our relationship with money. As someone who has felt the weight of financial anxiety, I understand the struggle of holding onto things we don’t need out of fear for the future. Whether it’s an old laptop, a car, or any material possession, the roots of this behavior are often found in a scarcity mentality, or what I call a “poverty spirit.”

Understanding the Poverty Spirit

A poverty spirit is driven by shame—shame that convinces us that we or our provisions are never enough. This mindset can lead us to cling to the most broken-down versions of what we have because we’re afraid to invest in better versions, even when financially feasible. This fear keeps us from experiencing the joy of abundance and the blessings it can convey.

Breaking the Cycle: The Laptop Dilemma

For me, the realization hit home when both my laptop and my finances were functioning below par. Although blessed with a lump sum of money, my fear of making the wrong decision kept me from buying a new laptop, even as the old one was failing me every day. It was a conversation with my husband that finally pushed me to take the step forward and make the necessary purchase.

The Role of Cultural and Family Influences

For many people of color, economic disenfranchisement is a recurring theme, passed down through generations. We’re taught to live within our means, save for rainy days, and prioritize necessity over luxury. While these lessons are valuable, they can unintentionally cultivate a mindset that blocks us from moving forward when upgrades are necessary.

On the other hand, there’s a cultural push towards constant upgrading, which can also lead us astray. The challenge lies in balancing caution with courage to accept when change is not only okay but necessary.

Finding a Balanced Approach

Addressing a poverty spirit requires introspection and a willingness to heal. Here are some guiding questions and strategies that can help:

  1. Do You Need the Upgrade? Assess if your current possessions serve you well or are hindering your progress.
  2. Was Provision Sent? Sometimes, we overlook financial provisions earmarked for specific needs. Be open to where the universe is guiding you.
  3. Seek Guidance from Trusted Community Members. Those who know you can provide external perspectives you might not see.
  4. Pray and Meditate. Connecting with a higher power, whether through prayer or meditation, will bring clarity and understanding.
  5. Consider the Broader Financial Landscape. Understanding systemic issues can help contextualize your personal experiences, especially regarding economic disenfranchisement.

Encouragement for the Journey

Healing your relationship with money is an ongoing journey. As someone working on this myself, I recognize that it requires faith, reflection, and community support. It’s important to remember that abundance isn’t just about wealth; it’s about adopting a mindset that allows for both material and spiritual fulfillment.
